Review and Buying Guide of Buying Guide of Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5

To start with expertise of sat nav. This is the to start with sat nav i have owned/used. I researched the acquire for weeks and decided that the nuvi 1490 was the best from assessments and suggestions from other end users. On first opening the box it was very clear that this was a perfectly manufactured/top quality item. Getting my way round its a variety of capabilities took time. It is vital to down load a handbook from garmin to get a full picture of its functionality and procedure. It is capable of carrying out fairly a ton of things. Some things i suspect i shall in no way use e. , employing it to check out pictures from a micro sd card. So there are a number of recommendations i would make for individuals new to the nuvi and possibly the world of sat nav, from my to start with two or three months ownership. I would suggest using time to explore the procedure of the sat nav. Primarily the many means of finding a desired destination. Also the means in which you can then view the proposed route.

It is not clear-cut - at least it was not for me. When you know what you are performing nevertheless it is really effortless. The following problem concerns its link to a computer system. There are a number of methods you have to work through to sign up the sat nav with garmin, and subsequently to receive updates, and to receive the hottest map update (inside 2 months).

Beneficial responses: extensive display and auto-zooming make path-discovering simple. Lane exhibit is practical at occupied junctions. Routing has been issues-free, and equivalent with my lexus in-built sat-nav. Bluetooth syncs conveniently with nokia phone and reads the phonebook.

Reservation: the device has frozen from time to time when redrawing the map, needing a challenging reset - there are net conversations about achievable software package problem on some designs. I would test standing on this right before obtaining. Negative Review of Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5" Sat Nav Bundle with UK and Full Europe Maps, Bluetooth and Free Lifetime Traffic

Strongly made but disappointing performance. I received my new garmin nuvi 1490 with full european maps, in very good time. It felt well made and strong. I immediately downloaded street maps of paris, warsaw, & london as they are places i visit from time to time. I still have a tom tom with european maps, which has been very good, but after 5 years of use i felt the maps needed updating.

The majority of users state that map downloads are a nightmare with tom tom and customer service is not good. There was no expansion slot on the tom tom so i decided to start again with garmin. I regret that my experience so far is extremely negative. My first use was a trip to the west country. I set a postcode and full address details for a b&b in watchet.

Adhere with It!. Almost prompted a divorce the to start with time we utilized it but that's not the machine's fault! labored o. K. Out of the box, uncomplicated to established up - join to laptop to update firm ware (do this on a frequent basis for ongoing updates). Maps apparent,(even though a handful of evident mistakes)spoken guidance distinct despite the fact that woman voice much less unique. Traffic jam updates superior. Third bash pois plentiful but remember to add all the things at 1 go as earlier inputs are overwritten. Is effective for me - a good piece of package. Addendum to earlier mentioned - if you are updating maps make absolutely sure you have, a really fast internet connection, a fast cpu, a great deal of time. And tolerance. Took me about nine tries about 3 days to last but not least get everything sorted. If the downloader seems as if it is executing anything, it likely is! it truly is just flaming sluggish. Also i hope the update is main usually it is a lot of effort for perhaps very very little. .

Some Problems, But Outstanding In general. This appears to be to be a solution that divides view. Yes, i recognise most of the criticisms that have been created by other reviewers, but i also consider they can be triumph over to a big degree. For instance:1. Acquire a dashboard mount: i locate this a must have, furnishing someplace to tuck spare wiring, as nicely as generating removal from the motor vehicle that much less difficult. 2. Correct, the touchscreen can be frustrating at initially, but with follow problems develop into much rarer. Of course, the most straightforward way to use a satnav is just to set your destination in and let the satnav get you there, but we all know the challenges that can produce, when the satnav thinks that impassable monitor is a good small reduce, keeping away from the have to have to take the key street miles even more. The great gain of the nüvi 1490 is that you can use it away from the automobile to system and simulate routes. If you feel the satnav is incorrect you can constantly alter the route by adding waypoints. As with human beings, it cannot be envisioned to reply to info it hasn't been given, so if there is no fm signal or no information out there, you may perhaps continue to be caught in a queue. Having said that, whilst driving from the north east to the midlands a short while ago, i twice had reason to be grateful for its skill to re-route in the deal with of traffic complications up forward, so this is a handy feature, inspite of its limits. Eventually, the nüvi 1490 is not just a satnav for the auto. It is really gentle-bodyweight and its pedestrian method usually means you can go on to us it when you have left the motor vehicle, enabling you to stay away from receiving misplaced in town. So, all in all, this satnav may not yet be the reply to all our desires, but it is really even now the very best i have come throughout. .

Garmin Nuvi 1490. I purchased this satnav to travel through the wilds of the gers in sw france but sadly, the very first 1 gave up ahead of i experienced still left the wilds of sw london. The good thing is amazon's wonderful replacement procedure meant that i nevertheless experienced a person right before environment off, whilst no time to try out it out. The point that i am however awarding this five stars in spite of that hiccup is an indication of how a great deal i liked it. Which magazine experienced advisable it and i entirely see why. The most practical function for me was the display that popped up every time you experienced to adjust motorways in france exhibiting the applicable motorway sign and highlighting the right lane to just take. This was my to start with time driving in europe, i was on your own, and this piece of equipment entirely de-pressured the journey. Couple of probs brought on i suspect by my lack of time for attempt-out. Make absolutely sure that you select swiftest, not shortest, route normally you can expect to obtain your self likely cross nation!seemingly you can bluetooth your cellular phone in to enable you to tap the display screen to solution, but i have not acquired all around to that still. I was remaining in a little hamlet in the center of nowhere, but all the tracks were being on the map in contrast to the borrowed tomtom i employed before in the year. The garmin screen was also a great deal easier and better marked out than the tomtom. Truly an excellent purchase, and i would not be reluctant to recommend it to any-just one, but notably to any-1 who would like a basic to run piece of equipment that works properly and is not way too expensive. .

Conclusion of Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5" Sat Nav Bundle

Inevitably picked this garmin after looking at a lot of other gps models. It will work, and it arrives free with the device (indeed i'm chatting to you tomtom with your overpriced optional fm aerials). Rather than just expressing 'turn still left in x', it in fact tells you the identify of the road you need to have to choose (and pretty remarkably pronounces anything effectively). Helps make a substantial variation when driving in a town as you no longer have to glance at the gps display screen to check where it thinks it is, and thus where the 2nd still left essentially is. Beautiful significant display screen, full post-code search, lane assistance, road-identify speech, bundled fm traffic, great easy, obvious gui, european maps.

This is my second satnav, acquired to swap a quite good 1 made by sony, who have now ceased to develop satnavs, so that getting map updates was a challenge. Its estimate of arrival moments is a bit optimistic, but, there again, i haven't linked the traffic data aerial but, so maybe that can be excused. The maps appear to be pretty up-to-date - it was very good to be able to get a free update just following obtain. Out of the box, easy to established up - connect to computer system to update business ware (do this on a normal foundation for ongoing updates). Addendum to higher than - if you are updating maps make absolutely sure you have, a really quick online link, a rapidly cpu, a lot of time. Of system, the most straightforward way to use a satnav is just to set your spot in and let the satnav acquire you there, but we all know the problems that can create, when the satnav thinks that impassable observe is a fantastic shorter slash, preventing the need to choose the primary street miles even more. If you think the satnav is incorrect you can constantly change the route by adding waypoints. On the other hand, whilst driving from the north east to the midlands recently, i 2 times experienced rationale to be grateful for its skill to re-route in the experience of traffic problems up forward, so this is a useful element, even with its limitations. The most valuable feature for me was the screen that popped up every time you experienced to modify motorways in france displaying the applicable motorway signal and highlighting the accurate lane to get.

This was my initially time driving in europe, i was by yourself, and this piece of devices fully de-stressed the journey. Make confident that you pick fastest, not shortest, route normally you can come across by yourself heading cross countryapparently you can bluetooth your cell phone in to enable you to faucet the monitor to remedy, but i have not obtained around to that still. The garmin monitor was also substantially easier and much better marked out than the tomtom. I experienced owned a tom tom seven hundred for several years and for the reason that it had been an pricey current from my wife i couldn't justify changing it. The two sons experienced owned garmins for some time and favored them to my tom tom the 1490 seemed to do every little thing that i wanted (and a lot more) and i must say i've not been let down: slender, light-weight broad, apparent contact - display screen spoken avenue names pace digicam audible warnings new display screen seems at a junction advising of lane positioning (superb) visible warning of dashing etcetera.

The display layout can be adjusted, and a full readout of your prepared journey in text or on a map is there. I might suggest that you update maps promptly from the garmin web page (very simple) and also set up a copy of mapsource on your computer - this allows you to prepare your journey in its entirety at your leisure, and then upload it to the gps. Touching the display screen (which demands tension, unlike the capacitance-sort display screen on the tom tom) provides up all types of sub-menus, and with a little bit of demo and error becomes easy to use. Finding my way round its a variety of capabilities took time. It is essential to down load a handbook from garmin to get a full image of its performance and operation.

I would suggest having time to take a look at the operation of the sat nav. There are a few measures you have to function as a result of to sign up the sat nav with garmin, and subsequently to obtain updates, and to obtain the most up-to-date map update (within 2 months). The map obtain for illustration can consider several several hours, and then it takes a even more hour or so to install the downloads on to the nuvi. The map down load was productive i'm pleased to say, notwithstanding that i misplaced the net connection 50 % way as a result of.In 3 months i have related my nuvi to the laptop or computer a number of occasions and just about every time i join i get the message that there are software updates offered.

On the strength of viewpoint i did get this device- and have uncovered the pursuing details with it:1) hefty cable- of course it is cumbersome- but in my impression only a little bit moreso than my aged 205w power guide- and is powering the traffic aerial to boot- so understandable. When the traffic get the job done nevertheless it is outstanding- and is as superior as owning aa traffic reviews right below your nose. I did update the firmware- and it manufactured minor big difference, but since then garmin have releaves an additional software package update by way of their web page and as of twenty seventh dec this seems to be giving the device reliability on a par with the 205w- as i was expecting in the to start with place4) map updates. Sure i have downloaded my free update the device did require it- a range of junctions on the route weren't proven correctly but now are. 5mb throughout) the uncompression and set up took a similiar time to the obtain- and i would strongly recommend a more recent pc to do this on.

The overhead junction layout prepare the unit shows i also locate a nice contact- and allows maintain items clearer- and a great deal greater that the 205wi do like the even larger sizing #it allows a more substantial speaker so you can listen to the bulletins easier) and usually have preferred the garmin interface- which is fairly substantially the same as the 205w. Acquiring been utilized formerly to out-of-day mapping this garmin was a genuine treasure discovering routes for quick driving. Immediately after really a large amount of time looking into the different units out there i discovered that the garmin 1490t, not like tomtom, delivers recent lifetime traffic hold off data and re-routes your journey if there are delays forward. Obtaining tried this on a long (250 mile) journey i observed that a additional intuitive route various the expected arrival time by as much as above an hour - presumably having a lengthier route and thus defeating the item of conserving fuel. Will locate out in the fullness of time.

Getting had a tomtom in the previous, i come across the garmin so significantly easier to use. The good news is it does get the job done in my house (with the aerials draped throughout the furnishings), and when it operates, it performs well. The way that this satnav warns you of heavy traffic in advance is beneficial, but not a hundred% exact. I have analyzed it out a couple situations on routes that i know rather perfectly. I purchased this satnav to swap a sony device, and was unhappy from the outset.

The mapping show may possibly be 'standard garmin', but showed small change from the just one that my wife's 5 12 months previous nuvi has it appears to be dated. I chose this unit for the free traffic details, and that is a advantage when it is effective. It took me a time to realise that the fm receiver module that is built in to the ability lead demands to be possibly wrapped all-around the device or perched on the top rated of the dashboard to do the job at all. The directions are especially weak and it took some time to understand what the many icons signify, and the sony unquestionably trumps the garmin in phrases of the on screen information in the course of a journey. This unit is distinct, finds a sign promptly and won't hold loosing it.

Also i utilized to like the actuality that on my outdated machine i could have 50 % the display taken up by the 'map type' instruction so at a glance you could see what was coming up. The only other matter i really don't like too substantially is the size of the in auto charger, it retains receiving in the way, but you can get all around this by buying the journey charger package and charging up the interior battery when at property and applying the device devoid of the in car or truck charger link. The attraction for this garmin is the substantial display screen sizing, there is a lot of map displaying together with the several details proven tothe side. It features european mapping, basic safety digital camera database, and traffic data. Future updates of the mapping will have to be paid out for, despite the fact that there is a free update in the initially sixty times should a person come to be accessible.

A Lesson Learnt. I unfortunately made the mistake of leaving my previous sat nav on the windscreen overnight after a long day at the wheel - not an excuse for having the side window smashed and of course, stolen. Having been used previously to out-of-date mapping this garmin was a real treasure finding routes for easy driving. I have yet to update with the latest data but have so far been pleased and impressed with the useful and comprehensive information loaded in this machine. For instance, if you need to find the nearest halfords store to wherever you may be - there it is! literally touch and go. This also applies to most stores, food places (fast or otherwise) and accomodation whether hotel or campsite as well as all the local places of interest of course. Full addresses and phone numbers are all there too. After quite a lot of time researching the various units out there i found that the garmin 1490t, unlike tomtom, offers current lifetime traffic delay information and re-routes your journey if there are delays ahead. Tomtom is just for the first year and then only on subscription. I also like the little 'bong bong' when approaching speed cameras and a further 'bong' if you are exceeding the limit. This also applies to areas where mobile cameras may be in operation. The only feature i am not exactly convinced with is the so-called 'eco-route'. Having tried this on a long (250 mile) journey i found that a more intuitive route varied the anticipated arrival time by as much as over an hour - presumably taking a longer route and thereby defeating the object of saving fuel. Maybe this works better on short trips. Will find out in the fullness of time. So there it is - a versatile sat nav with enough features for most travellers, taking the strain away from searching for signposts, getting in the wrong lane on motorways and possibly picking up an(other) sp30 ticket on the way. The dedicated leather case and mains charger are of very good quality too. I can definitely recommend the garmin 1490t. .

My Second Gps My Second Garmin. Firstly thank you to everyone else who's taken the time to review this. On the strength of opinion i did buy this unit- and have found the following points with it:1) hefty cable- yes it is bulky- but in my opinion only slightly moreso than my old 205w power lead- and is powering the traffic aerial to boot- so understandable. I personally wrap the excess bulk around my cupholder- but can understand other reviewers concerns over this. 2) the additional aerial and suckers i find too short. I could do with it being 50% longer, and another sucker- and i suspect causes a poor traffic reception- moreso than it should. I have lost reception for upto 1hr on a 4hr journey east-west via birmingham. When the traffic work though it is brilliant- and is as good as having aa traffic reports right under your nose. 3) software issues. When i first received it- and used it on one of my journeys i did experience issues over it locking up- which it did 3 times over said 4hr journeys. This seemed to be related to a) poor connection with the lighter socket and b) just using the device sometimes also caused a lockup and reset- at some very bad moments! fortuantely it went back to where it left off. I did update the firmware- and it made little difference, but since then garmin have releaves another software update through their site and as of 27th dec this appears to be giving the unit reliability on a par with the 205w- as i was expecting in the first place!4) map updates. Yes i have downloaded my free update the unit did need it- a number of junctions on the route weren't shown correctly but now are. Yes it is a whopping 3+gb's worth and did take a good couple of hours on my 8mb broadband verified running at 7. 5mb throughout) the uncompression and installation took a similiar time to the download- and i would strongly recommend a newer pc to do this on. Suggest to set the download going and then leave it- probably best done overnight. Do the same with the installation- this is one process that will take a long while- so just let it run its course. 5) junction view- does what it says. But not for every single interchange. I've found it only does for major motorway and dual carriageway interchanges, but you can call it in advance by clicking the lane button in top left, and clicking junction view. I find this a quirk- but personally find it nice it can be called on demand from about 2 miles beforehand. The overhead junction layout plan the unit shows i also find a nice touch- and helps keep things clearer- and much better that the 205wi do like the bigger size #it allows a bigger speaker so you can hear the announcements easier) and always have liked the garmin interface- which is pretty much the same as the 205w. It's nice put onto a bigger screen though. Overall i like this. It would of scored it higher, had i not had the issue over the software updates. .
