This is my very first sat-nav, and i desired to make guaranteed i acquired the suitable one. I study masses of testimonials, some great, some bad, but largely excellent, and inevitably made the decision on the 1490t. I have to say that i am not dissappointed at all.It does all the things it says on the box.
It is swift to estimate routes, swift to recalculate if i consider a detour. It interfaces with my mobile phone definitely conveniently. The voices are obvious, even though it does have difficulties with 'swanlow lane'. Recommendations by highway identify are very useful, while this can be turned off if preferred. The monitor is a good size and pretty crystal clear.
Impressive satnav (up to date 2012). I downloaded the full handbook, free from the garmin web site, but it truly is fairly opaque. I discovered the overview in gps journal (united states) extra practical (google the august 2009 version to identify the overview) - especially as i'm a novice with satnavs. I registered at the my garmin website and downloaded the latest free map updates along with the most recent software update ahead of working with the 1490t in the motor vehicle. This procedure is reasonably straightforward furnished you observe the on-display screen guidelines specifically.
Nevertheless it normally takes time - about four hrs to obtain the map update working with a bt broadband connection. Yet, a bit to my surprise, it all worked effortlessly. I also purchased 1) the garmin friction mount which suits me incredibly effectively and i significantly prefer its portability and features to the suction-cup mount that will come with the 1490t and 2) a situation for the satnav which i assume will prove to be indispensible. In use in the uk (birmingham/newcastle/london)the 1490t appears to be outstanding. I am truly impressed and so much the directions have been remarkably precise and valuable.

Negative Review of Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5" Sat Nav Bundle with UK and Full Europe Maps, Bluetooth and Free Lifetime Traffic
I've only ever had garmins, marine and road, but this is probably my last. My previous garmin was getting old and not worth upgrading the maps, so i got a new garmin for xmas. Widescreen, unlimited updates, great.Unfortunately there are several issues.
When finding some streets, old streets, sometimes the postcode search does not find them but the road name search does, and vice versa. Trying a different order on the road name search gets different results. This is all the worse when driving on the road in question. The system does know the road name and your position. Garmin has decided to show points of interest wether you want them or not.

Adhere with It!. Practically caused a divorce the 1st time we employed it but that's not the machine's fault! worked o. K. Out of the box, quick to set up - join to pc to update agency ware (do this on a normal basis for ongoing updates). Maps distinct,(even though a couple of glaring problems)spoken guidelines clear even though feminine voice less distinctive. Traffic jam updates superior. Third occasion pois abundant but don't forget to add everything at one go as earlier inputs are overwritten. Functions for me - a decent piece of kit. Addendum to higher than - if you are updating maps make sure you have, a extremely fast world-wide-web link, a rapid cpu, a good deal of time. And persistence. Took me about 9 attempts above a few times to at last get everything sorted. If the downloader appears as if it is performing a thing, it likely is! it is really just flaming gradual. Also i hope the update is key or else it is a good deal of energy for perhaps extremely minimal. .
Some Issues, But Fantastic General. This would seem to be a merchandise that divides opinion. Yes, i recognise most of the criticisms that have been produced by other reviewers, but i also consider they can be overcome to a big degree. For illustration:one. Purchase a dashboard mount: i obtain this invaluable, offering someplace to tuck spare wiring, as well as building elimination from the car or truck that a great deal less complicated. 2. Correct, the touchscreen can be discouraging at to start with, but with apply glitches grow to be a lot rarer. Of class, the most basic way to use a satnav is just to place your spot in and let the satnav take you there, but we all know the troubles that can produce, when the satnav thinks that impassable track is a excellent brief lower, preventing the want to just take the principal street miles further. The excellent edge of the nüvi 1490 is that you can use it away from the car or truck to plan and simulate routes. If you consider the satnav is wrong you can constantly adjust the route by adding waypoints. As with human beings, it are unable to be expected to react to data it hasn't been given, so if there is no fm sign or no facts readily available, you might still be stuck in a queue. Even so, although driving from the north east to the midlands recently, i two times experienced rationale to be grateful for its skill to re-route in the encounter of traffic complications up ahead, so this is a useful attribute, regardless of its limitations. At last, the nüvi 1490 is not just a satnav for the auto. It is really light-fat and its pedestrian method indicates you can continue on to us it when you have still left the car, enabling you to keep away from having lost in town. So, all in all, this satnav may not still be the solution to all our desires, but it is continue to the most effective i have occur throughout. .
Garmin Nuvi 1490. I purchased this satnav to generate as a result of the wilds of the gers in sw france but sadly, the to start with one particular gave up in advance of i experienced left the wilds of sw london. Thankfully amazon's great substitution procedure intended that i nonetheless had just one prior to setting off, although no time to try it out. The simple fact that i am still awarding this five stars in spite of that hiccup is an indicator of how significantly i cherished it. Which journal had suggested it and i fully see why. The most useful characteristic for me was the screen that popped up each individual time you had to alter motorways in france showing the suitable motorway indicator and highlighting the right lane to take. This was my initial time driving in europe, i was alone, and this piece of tools totally de-pressured the journey. Couple of probs brought on i suspect by my absence of time for try-out. Make guaranteed that you pick out speediest, not shortest, route otherwise you are going to locate on your own heading cross place!seemingly you can bluetooth your mobile phone in to empower you to faucet the display to response, but i have not obtained about to that still. I was keeping in a tiny hamlet in the middle of nowhere, but all the tracks have been on the map unlike the borrowed tomtom i used earlier in the 12 months. The garmin display was also significantly easier and far better marked out than the tomtom. Genuinely an excellent get, and i would not be reluctant to propose it to any-a single, but particularly to any-one who wishes a easy to function piece of tools that operates properly and isn't really way too pricey. .

Conclusion of Garmin Nuvi 1490T 5" Sat Nav Bundle
Finally selected this garmin following looking at a ton of other gps units. It performs, and it arrives free with the unit (sure i'm speaking to you tomtom with your overpriced optional fm aerials). Instead than just indicating 'turn still left in x', it really tells you the name of the highway you need to take (and fairly remarkably pronounces every little thing properly). Makes a enormous difference when driving in a town as you no more time have to glance at the gps screen to look at where it thinks it is, and thus exactly where the 2nd remaining truly is. Lovely huge monitor, full post-code search, lane guidance, street-identify speech, bundled fm traffic, good uncomplicated, crystal clear gui, european maps.
This is my second satnav, bought to swap a incredibly fantastic a person generated by sony, who have now ceased to create satnavs, so that acquiring map updates was a issue. Its estimate of arrival moments is a little bit optimistic, but, there once more, i haven't connected the traffic facts aerial however, so perhaps that can be excused. The maps appear to be extremely up-to-day - it was superior to be able to get a free update just soon after purchase. Out of the box, straightforward to established up - hook up to pc to update organization ware (do this on a normal basis for ongoing updates). Addendum to previously mentioned - if you are updating maps make positive you have, a very quick world-wide-web relationship, a rapidly cpu, plenty of time. Of program, the easiest way to use a satnav is just to put your spot in and permit the satnav acquire you there, but we all know the complications that can create, when the satnav thinks that impassable monitor is a great limited lower, preventing the need to have to consider the principal street miles further. If you feel the satnav is wrong you can often change the route by including waypoints. Nonetheless, even though driving from the north east to the midlands lately, i 2 times experienced rationale to be grateful for its potential to re-route in the experience of traffic difficulties up in advance, so this is a useful element, even with its restrictions. The most beneficial characteristic for me was the display screen that popped up each individual time you experienced to transform motorways in france exhibiting the appropriate motorway signal and highlighting the correct lane to get.
This was my to start with time driving in europe, i was alone, and this piece of gear absolutely de-pressured the journey. Make absolutely sure that you opt for speediest, not shortest, route or else you can come across you heading cross countryapparently you can bluetooth your cellular phone in to permit you to tap the display to solution, but i have not received all-around to that but. The garmin screen was also much much easier and superior marked out than the tomtom. I had owned a tom tom 700 for various yrs and since it had been an highly-priced present from my spouse i couldn't justify replacing it. Each sons experienced owned garmins for some time and preferred them to my tom tom the 1490 appeared to do anything that i needed (and extra) and i ought to say i've not been unhappy: thin, lightweight extensive, crystal clear touch - display screen spoken road names speed digital camera audible warnings new display screen appears at a junction advising of lane positioning (superb) visual warning of rushing and so on.
The display format can be transformed, and a full readout of your prepared journey in text or on a map is there. I would endorse that you update maps quickly from the garmin web page (incredibly simple) and also install a copy of mapsource on your computer - this permits you to prepare your journey in its entirety at your leisure, and then upload it to the gps. Touching the display screen (which desires strain, not like the capacitance-form display on the tom tom) provides up all sorts of sub-menus, and with a little bit of demo and mistake gets to be simple to use. Discovering my way round its a variety of features took time. It is essential to obtain a handbook from garmin to get a full image of its performance and procedure.
I would propose having time to investigate the procedure of the sat nav. There are a several actions you have to operate by means of to sign-up the sat nav with garmin, and subsequently to receive updates, and to receive the newest map update (inside 2 months). The map obtain for illustration can consider a number of several hours, and then it requires a even more hour or so to set up the downloads on to the nuvi. The map down load was effective i am pleased to say, notwithstanding that i missing the online link 50 percent way by means of.In three months i have related my nuvi to the pc various periods and just about every time i link i get the information that there are software program updates available.
On the strength of impression i did obtain this unit- and have observed the following factors with it:1) significant cable- certainly it is bulky- but in my opinion only marginally moreso than my aged 205w electrical power lead- and is powering the traffic aerial to boot- so comprehensible. When the traffic do the job though it is good- and is as good as possessing aa traffic experiences right underneath your nose. I did update the firmware- and it created very little big difference, but because then garmin have releaves a further computer software update by their web site and as of twenty seventh dec this seems to be giving the unit trustworthiness on a par with the 205w- as i was anticipating in the initially place4) map updates. Of course i have downloaded my free update the unit did need to have it- a selection of junctions on the route were not demonstrated accurately but now are. 5mb through) the uncompression and set up took a similiar time to the download- and i would strongly recommend a more recent computer to do this on.
The overhead junction structure approach the device shows i also uncover a awesome touch- and helps continue to keep items clearer- and a great deal superior that the 205wi do like the even bigger size #it lets a larger speaker so you can listen to the bulletins a lot easier) and constantly have appreciated the garmin interface- which is rather significantly the exact as the 205w. Acquiring been utilised beforehand to out-of-date mapping this garmin was a actual treasure locating routes for quick driving. Just after pretty a lot of time researching the several units out there i observed that the garmin 1490t, contrary to tomtom, delivers present-day lifetime traffic delay details and re-routes your journey if there are delays forward. Owning experimented with this on a very long (250 mile) journey i uncovered that a more intuitive route diverse the expected arrival time by as a lot as around an hour - presumably having a extended route and therefore defeating the item of saving gasoline. Will come across out in the fullness of time.
Possessing experienced a tomtom in the previous, i obtain the garmin so substantially easier to use. Fortunately it does function in my dwelling (with the aerials draped throughout the household furniture), and when it operates, it performs properly. The way that this satnav warns you of hefty traffic ahead is useful, but not 100% accurate. I have examined it out a handful of periods on routes that i know reasonably properly. I purchased this satnav to swap a sony unit, and was let down from the outset.
The mapping screen may be 'standard garmin', but showed minimal alter from the a person that my wife's five calendar year outdated nuvi has it looks dated. I chose this device for the free traffic data, and that is a advantage when it works. It took me a time to realise that the fm receiver module that is created in to the power lead wants to be either wrapped about the device or perched on the prime of the dashboard to work at all. The instructions are in particular weak and it took some time to understand what the many icons mean, and the sony surely trumps the garmin in phrases of the on monitor data for the duration of a journey. This device is obvious, finds a signal speedily and does not keep loosing it.
Also i employed to like the simple fact that on my aged equipment i could have fifty percent the display taken up by the 'map type' instruction so at a look you could see what was coming up. The only other issue i never like as well a lot is the size of the in car charger, it keeps having in the way, but you can get about this by getting the vacation charger kit and charging up the inside battery when at household and applying the device devoid of the in car or truck charger relationship. The attraction for this garmin is the massive display sizing, there is loads of map demonstrating along with the many facts proven tothe facet. It incorporates european mapping, protection digital camera database, and traffic details. Long term updates of the mapping will have to be compensated for, despite the fact that there is a free update inside the to start with 60 days should really a single grow to be obtainable.
A Lesson Learnt. I unfortunately made the mistake of leaving my previous sat nav on the windscreen overnight after a long day at the wheel - not an excuse for having the side window smashed and of course, stolen. Having been used previously to out-of-date mapping this garmin was a real treasure finding routes for easy driving. I have yet to update with the latest data but have so far been pleased and impressed with the useful and comprehensive information loaded in this machine. For instance, if you need to find the nearest halfords store to wherever you may be - there it is! literally touch and go. This also applies to most stores, food places (fast or otherwise) and accomodation whether hotel or campsite as well as all the local places of interest of course. Full addresses and phone numbers are all there too. After quite a lot of time researching the various units out there i found that the garmin 1490t, unlike tomtom, offers current lifetime traffic delay information and re-routes your journey if there are delays ahead. Tomtom is just for the first year and then only on subscription. I also like the little 'bong bong' when approaching speed cameras and a further 'bong' if you are exceeding the limit. This also applies to areas where mobile cameras may be in operation. The only feature i am not exactly convinced with is the so-called 'eco-route'. Having tried this on a long (250 mile) journey i found that a more intuitive route varied the anticipated arrival time by as much as over an hour - presumably taking a longer route and thereby defeating the object of saving fuel. Maybe this works better on short trips. Will find out in the fullness of time. So there it is - a versatile sat nav with enough features for most travellers, taking the strain away from searching for signposts, getting in the wrong lane on motorways and possibly picking up an(other) sp30 ticket on the way. The dedicated leather case and mains charger are of very good quality too. I can definitely recommend the garmin 1490t. .
My Second Gps My Second Garmin. Firstly thank you to everyone else who's taken the time to review this. On the strength of opinion i did buy this unit- and have found the following points with it:1) hefty cable- yes it is bulky- but in my opinion only slightly moreso than my old 205w power lead- and is powering the traffic aerial to boot- so understandable. I personally wrap the excess bulk around my cupholder- but can understand other reviewers concerns over this. 2) the additional aerial and suckers i find too short. I could do with it being 50% longer, and another sucker- and i suspect causes a poor traffic reception- moreso than it should. I have lost reception for upto 1hr on a 4hr journey east-west via birmingham. When the traffic work though it is brilliant- and is as good as having aa traffic reports right under your nose. 3) software issues. When i first received it- and used it on one of my journeys i did experience issues over it locking up- which it did 3 times over said 4hr journeys. This seemed to be related to a) poor connection with the lighter socket and b) just using the device sometimes also caused a lockup and reset- at some very bad moments! fortuantely it went back to where it left off. I did update the firmware- and it made little difference, but since then garmin have releaves another software update through their site and as of 27th dec this appears to be giving the unit reliability on a par with the 205w- as i was expecting in the first place!4) map updates. Yes i have downloaded my free update the unit did need it- a number of junctions on the route weren't shown correctly but now are. Yes it is a whopping 3+gb's worth and did take a good couple of hours on my 8mb broadband verified running at 7. 5mb throughout) the uncompression and installation took a similiar time to the download- and i would strongly recommend a newer pc to do this on. Suggest to set the download going and then leave it- probably best done overnight. Do the same with the installation- this is one process that will take a long while- so just let it run its course. 5) junction view- does what it says. But not for every single interchange. I've found it only does for major motorway and dual carriageway interchanges, but you can call it in advance by clicking the lane button in top left, and clicking junction view. I find this a quirk- but personally find it nice it can be called on demand from about 2 miles beforehand. The overhead junction layout plan the unit shows i also find a nice touch- and helps keep things clearer- and much better that the 205wi do like the bigger size #it allows a bigger speaker so you can hear the announcements easier) and always have liked the garmin interface- which is pretty much the same as the 205w. It's nice put onto a bigger screen though. Overall i like this. It would of scored it higher, had i not had the issue over the software updates. .
