Cheap TomTom ONE XL V1 Great Britain Satellite Navigation System

Review and Buying Guide of Cheap TomTom ONE XL V1 Great Britain Satellite Navigation System

Excellent addition to the car. . Works a treat in a focus with a front screen heater, soon you dont need the display (probally safer anyway) the directions are generally clear and helpful. Minor niggles - 'left turn ahead' is not the same as 'turn left ahead' it seems to suggest the former is an alternate route option. The beep for exceeding the speed limit is not always consistent - it will sometimes (very occasionally) suggest a lower speed than reality, but only for 20 yards or so. Its routes out and back are generally not the same and probally takes account of estimated traffic speeds at different times of the day, still showed me some good alternatives i'd not have tried.

Oh, and the fixed speed cameras thing is great.

Tom tom one xl. Had been looking for a sat nav for some time and was going to go for the tom tom one but having seen the size of this model i decided to go for this instead mainly because of the size. I have had it about a week now and it is in my opinion very good works straight out of the box and takes me where i want to go with the safety cameras pre-installed whenever i come up on some cameras a little warning goes off and flashes up on screen. It may not have the thrills of an mp3 player or a picture viewer but unless you really plan on using these features i cant really see the point in them. I connected my tom tom to my laptop and installation of the tom tom software via a cd was a breeze and connecting my tom tom via usb it was detected straight away in vista home premium and updated to the newest up to date maps.

Having previously had a navman all be it for only about a week i was'nt very impressed with it i can highly recomend the tom tom but at the end of the day i think it all comes down to user preference. The model i had came with bluetooth so you can connect your mobile so to receive traffic updates.

Negative Review of TomTom ONE XL V1 Great Britain Satellite Navigation System

Bigger is not better. I can't fault the tomtom for ease of use - pick it up out of the box and you'll find it completely intuitive to set destinations both by postcode or street name, and get going. I find it gives me pretty good instructions - occasionally the voice direction comes in a bit late but you can get better warning from a glance at the map. But it's tomtom - ease of use is what they're known for. So why am i scoring the one xl a lowly 2 out of 5?because it falls off the windscreen all the time.

That's why. They've upped the size and therefore the weight, and it's just too much for the silly little mount that comes as standard. Secondly, don't take any notice of the box's boast that the one xl is 'traffic ready'. This means spending more money on the extra tcm aerial to get warning of delays and suggested re-routing. So buy a one xl and you're faced with shelling out for an alternative mount to stop it falling into your lap, and also for the tcm aerial.

  • Good Unit Let Down by Little Things. All in all this is a very good satnav unit. Having previously owned a garmin nuvi 660, and having returned it due to the appalling tmc reception, the access to tomtom plus traffic services is a definite plus. The tomtom also has much more customisability than the nuvi e. G. You can define an itinerary, or set a route that avoids a particular road. However, there are other things that i miss. The display of traffic info when browsing the map could be simplified. It is often hard to read, and clicking on the traffic pois can be a challenge while driving. However the unit does highlight delays relevant to the route, although the calculation of delay times appears somewhat exaggerated, and should be taken with a degree of caution. In fact, the tomtom's calculation of journey times in general appears to be on the high side. The other thing i miss is the text-to-speech facility that allows the nuvi to tell you which street or motorway you're driving on. And the nuvi also highlights mobile speed camera zones, while the tomtom only displays fixed camera positions. Talking of display, there doesn't seem to be a way to get the tomtom to switch automatically from day to night-time display. There is on the nuvi. Accessing traffic data whilst en-route also ties up the bluetooth on your mobile, and my phone is unable to connect to my hands-free device at the same time. As the one xl doesn't support hands-free calling, this is a big minus for anyone who wants to use their mobile phone legally on the road, and access plus services. Finally the windscreen mount, as mentioned by others, is prone to falling off on a regular basis. Unlike the nuvi's. All in all, a perfectly functional device, albeit lacking some useful features, and a little overpriced for what it is - you're essentially paying a premium of around 70% on a tomtom one, for the privilege of a wider screen. .

Never Get Lost Again. All i have had this unit for 6 months now and therefore feel qualified to give my view on it. In terms of ease of use, adding locations etc it is excellent. Searching by poi (points of interest) makes travelling so easy, e. G. Driving around centre of edinburgh, and want to navigate to the nearest aquarium. 2 minutes later we were on our way. Downsides** mediocre arm to hold in place. (my wife has problems pushing it on the windscreen with sufficiient strength)** tomtom traffic - never allow tom tom to replan your route to avoid delays. . It ends in disaster every time. I switch it on and use it as an esxtra source of information only. I let it take me off the m25 to avoid a 30 minute delay and hit a 2. 5 hour delay on the a3 which did not even register on tom tom traffic. ** takes a while to recover signal when you switch on in the morning. ** battery life is not good for using as handheld around city. Upside** i have never been lost since buying it. . I sometimes still take the wrong turns but i can always find my way back. ** it makes travelling more fun as you count down the miles to the next exit/junction** very accurate in terms of predicted time of arrival. I'd buy one especially as £70 cheaper in the past 6 months. .

Good Sat Nav - Poor Quality Mount. I have had my unit for a little over a month now, and find the unit excellent to use, having previously used a garmin i3. I have also had no problems with the tomtom home software, managing to get updates no problem, and have subscribed to mapshare, reported some errors and had some map corrections back. The screen mount is very poor, i have a disc on my dashboard as these are more reliable than the windscreen, and this poor mount has even came off the disc once and the unit fell to the car floor but luckily was not damaged - tomtom really should supply a better quality mount with such an excellent piece of kit. Next the map gaurantee - apparently if tomtom release updated maps you are entitled to a free map upgrade if this happens within 30 days of registering your unit on tomtom home. There is some confusion about whether this is only valid if there is a map gauarantee card in the box, or if this is only for the new 720/920 units, but according to pocketgps world forums some users have got a map update from 6. 75 to 7. 10. However when you try and use the latest map gaurantee link with tomtom hone, it reports that the unit has the latest maps which it obviously has not. I am currently tyring to get clarification from this from tomtom support, which is time consuming and confusing. Tomtom also have a map sale until jnauary 2008 with all maps half price. .

Conclusion of TomTom ONE XL V1 Great Britain Satellite Navigation System

I recently replaced my tomtom go for the one xl. The larger viewing screen is excellent navigation is a breeze and as with all tomtom products it effortlessly recalculates a new route if you go wrong without making you go back over previous roads. I would have given it 5-stars but tomtom have spoilt an excellent unit by supplying it with a dreadfully inferior mount. The windscreen mount no longer has a locking clip to secure it to the windscreen so it tends to fall off while your driving. They have also made the arm very short so once you have secured the mount to the screen it is extremely difficult to attach the unit as it is too close to the glass and near impossible to remove it, unless you remove the mount as well each time and then you start all over again.

But considering the price of the xl it should come with a useable mount similar to the other products in the range. Let's get the bad news out of the way first1) the supplied windscreen mount isn't big enough. I bought the alternate mount kit and that came with a dashboard mount so my tom tom is now in a perfect position (and easier to remove too)2) i bought the traffic edition of the tt one xl and i have not yet been able to get the rds traffic alerts to work at all. Route finding is spot on, the maps are very clear and the interface easy to use. A couple of tips1) you really must update the device every few days using the excellent tom tom home software to maintain the gps fix information - otherwise it can take several minutes to lock onto your position2) don't enter your actual home address as your 'home location' otherwise it becomes a homing beacon for anyone who steals it.

However the unit does highlight delays relevant to the route, although the calculation of delay times appears somewhat exaggerated, and should be taken with a degree of caution. In fact, the tomtom's calculation of journey times in general appears to be on the high side. And the nuvi also highlights mobile speed camera zones, while the tomtom only displays fixed camera positions. There were a couple of places where the spoken instructions weren't entirely clear, but one glance at the map is enough to keep you on track - with a readout for miles/yards to the next junction, current speed, estimated time of arrival, etc. The one problem was that the 'safety' camera warning sounded like and air raid siren, and it wasn't until i got back that i worked out how to change it to a simple bleep (via the 'tomtom services' icon). A tip for those who find it keeps falling off the windscreen - just wipe the windscreen, dab a few drops of water on the suction pad and press hard. Bought this after trying a mates tom tom go and liked it, so thought i`d treat myself. I must admit i didnt use the suppied cd but downloaded the software from the tom tom site with no problem.

A common problem a lot of people seem to have is the windscreen mount, i dont know if its just the car i have but when on the windscreen, the bottom of the unit rests on the top of the dash making it very secure and vibration free. For some reason, probably cost, tomtom have packaged the xl with a cheap windscreen mount. The mount is small and flimsy which means that the unit is constantly vibrating when you drive. I drive on my own to new destinations a lot and the tomtom has made life far less nerve-racking than trying to read a map. Negatives: my unit was temperamental from the time i received it and i finally had to send it for repairs.

However, within the space of a week, my unit has been returned under warranty to tomtom, repaired and sent back to me. Other comments: the tom tom website is not the most intuitive site in the world but does provide a number of software solutions. Finally, i have had no problem with the windscreen mount whatsoever (i drive a nissan micra). I researched this sat nav fairly intensively as being a same day delivery driver i had finally decided to get one. 3- speed limits are not accurate, so never go by them on the sat nav. I would also like to say that i noticed other people had complained about the windscreen holder and i have not had any problems with the sat nav falling off.

When you are setting it up to find your destination in the quickeest time it will not take you the quickest road, but what it perceives to be the shortest. I have found the navigaion excellent from the tomtom one xl great britain and ireland. If you want good navigaion tomtom is fine - if you want to find points of interest don't assume they will be there. Initially, i had problems with the tom tom home software due to my inexperience. I have no hesitation on recommending the tom tom one xl gb to anyone who, like me, used to habitually get lost.

After much research i finally settled on the tomtom one xl. This is a great product and has helped find new routes to places i normally visit. Firstly the sat nav kept freezing and would not always go to the default screen. I'd recommend it with just one reservation - the windscreen mount hasn't been upgraded and can't cope with the extra weight that the xl carries over the the tomtom one original. But the mount is of poor quality and the navigator keeps falling off the screen.

Glitches But Good Service. I've had my tomtom now for five months. Positives: it is intuitive and easy to use. It generally gives you plenty of warning before needing to make a turn. I drive on my own to new destinations a lot and the tomtom has made life far less nerve-racking than trying to read a map. I particularly like the fact that i know the distance between me and my next turn. Negatives: my unit was temperamental from the time i received it and i finally had to send it for repairs. It turned out that the sim card was defective. However, within the space of a week, my unit has been returned under warranty to tomtom, repaired and sent back to me. Excellent service. Other comments: the tom tom website is not the most intuitive site in the world but does provide a number of software solutions. I didn't have to wait more than 30 seconds for a phone call to be answered and the people on the other end of the phone knew what they were talking about. You *do* need to update satellite information on a regular basis from your computer if you want to get a quick satellite fix. Finally, i have had no problem with the windscreen mount whatsoever (i drive a nissan micra).

Good Unit, Cr*p Mount.. For some reason, probably cost, tomtom have packaged the xl with a cheap windscreen mount. The mount is small and flimsy which means that the unit is constantly vibrating when you drive. It's also a complete nightmare to get off your windscreen. It's a shame as the old mount on the original one was big and solid. I got around this by buying a new mount on ebay, but i really shouldn't have had to. Otherwise, it's a good solid unit with easy to use software. .
